Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Allen & Erdmann (2012: 377); record from Nusa Island, Kavieng District based on USNM 261195 (10). Specimens photographed at St. KVG19 (Bagail Bay, Kavieng District) by Serge Andréfouët on 19 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Lives in aggregations among corals, rocks, seagrass and Diadema sea urchins, 0–40 m depth. Marine.
