Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Ophichthys colubrinus and O. c. var. fasciata by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 81), based on ZMH 12015 and ZMH 12019.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 4.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa (south to Delagoa Bay, Mozambique) east to Johnston and Tuamotu (but not Hawaiian) islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Western Australia and New Caledonia. On sand patches of lagoon and seaward reefs, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
