Euacanthus militaris Distant 1918: 11 View in CoL .

Evacanthus militaris (Distant) View in CoL : Bliven 1955:10.

Ochraceous. Crown with transverse angulated fascia across eyes, black; short transverse spot on either side of median line on anterior margin visible in facial view, fuscous. Face ochraceous. Pronotum black in anterior half and ochraceous in posterior half with reddish tinge. Mesonotum black. Forewing ochraceous with reddish tinge, broad longitudinal fascia in claval area, another on corium extending from about middle of forewing to apex and costal margin to near apex, black, apical area brownish ochraceous. Abdominal sternites ochraceous.

Head wider than pronotum, with prominent carinae. Pronotum transversely deeply impressed medially.

Male genitalia. Pygofer with height more than length in lateral view; dorsal margin beyond basal incision rounded, posterior hyaline lobe finger-like, ventral margin uniformly convex, ventral process acuminate near tip, slightly exceeding dorsal margin of hyaline lobe. Subgenital plate approximately of uniform width, covered with hair-like setae without macrosetae, basally with short segment. Style in lateral view with apophysis triangular, footshaped heel blunt, toe well developed. Connective Y-shaped, stem longer than arms. Aedeagus elongate, with dorsolateral lobes rounded, with pigmented processes with truncate apex curved anteriorly in lateral view, shorter than shaft; shaft with lateral lamellate expansion in distal half, apex with V-shaped excavation, ventral margin of aedeagus uneven, ventral extension of atrium elongate. Segment X cylindrical, pigmented, with prominent conical projections at midlength on ventral margin.

Measurements. Male 6.2–7.0 mm long, 2.1 mm wide across eyes and 1.9 mm wide across pronotum. Female 6.6–6.9 mm long, 2.0– 2.1 mm wide across eyes and 1.9 mm wide across hind margins of pronotum.

Material examined. INDIA: Lectotype ♂ (here designated) ( Figs 7A–D View FIGURES7 ), “ Type [red edged disc]” “ Evacanthus militaris Dist. type [Distant’s hw]” “ Ind. Mus. Darjiling, E. Himalyas, alt 7000 ft, 9.vii.09, C. Paiva ” “ Distant Coll. 1911-383” ( BMNH) ; 1♀, Darjeeling District, East Himalaya , Lynch, Distant Coll. 1911-383 ( BMNH) ; West Bengal: 1 ♀, Darjeeling, 8000’, 6.viii.1978. Wesley; ( UASB) .

Remarks. Originally described from an unspecified number of specimens (syntypes) with the following data: “E. Himalayas; Darjiling (C. Paiva)”. This species can be readily recognized among the species of Evacanthus from the Indian subcontinent by its characteristic coloration and by the head being wider than the pronotum. Datta (1973: 214–215 Plate 1, figs 1–5; 1988: 54, figs 96–99) erroneously identified a species of Atkinsoniella Young (Cicadellinae) as this species.
