Cryptoxyleborus oxyurus Schedl View in CoL
Cryptoxyleborus oxyurus Schedl, 1942:184 View in CoL .
Xyleborus oxyurus (Schedl) : Schedl, 1950:894.
Cryptoxyleborus shoreae Browne, 1981:602 View in CoL , new synonymy
Taxonomy: This species was described from Pahang in West Malaysia. Although Schedl (1942) states ‘Typen im Imperial Insitute of Entomology und in meiner Sammlung’, no types were ever returned to London. The lectotype designated by Schedl (1979) is in NHMW, and has been examined. Cryptoxyleborus shoreae View in CoL was described from specimens imported to Japan in timber from the Philippines ( Browne 1981). The holotype of C. shoreae (BMNH) View in CoL has been examined, and both types have been separately compared with a third specimen in RAB from Indonesia (Sumatera). There are small differences in the proportions of the specimens, and minor errors in Browne’s description of C. shoreae View in CoL , but there is clearly only a single species represented, distinguished by its size, the restriction of hooked tubercles to the apices of the elytra, and the separately acuminate elytral apices. A photograph of the species in dorsal view (as C. shoreae View in CoL ) is included in Kikata et al. (1994).
Distribution: East Malaysia ( Sarawak), Philippines, West Malaysia. The species is newly recorded here from East Malaysia (Sabah) and Indonesia (Sumatera).
New Record: [ INDONESIA] Sumatra, Mt. Bandahara, c. 800 m, at light, 5.vii.1982. (1) ( RAB); [ MALAYSIA], Sabah, Danum Valley Field Station , 117 ° 48 9 E, 4 ° 58 9 N; ex unidentified fallen tree, 19.vii.2006, J. Hulcr ( MSU) GoogleMaps .
Biology: Recorded as C. shoreae from species of Dipterocarpus and Shorea (Dipterocarpaceae) ( Browne 1981; Ohno 1990 b).
