Type Locality: Peru, Junin Dept., Montana de Vitoc, Amable Maria.

Vernacular Names: Pacarana.

Synonyms: Dinomys gigas Anthony 1921 ; Dinomys occidentalis Lönnberg 1921 ; Dinomys pacarana de Miranda-Ribeiro 1919 .

Distribution: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia.

Conservation: IUCN – Endangered; rare.

Discussion: Reviewed by White and Alberico (1992). The placement within the Chinchilloidea by Mones (1981) and Reig (1986) is supported in the molecular analysis of Huchon and Douzery (2001).
