TYPE LOCALITY: Chile, Coquimbo Prov., Coquimbo .
DISTRIBUTION: C. and S. Peru; N. and C. Chile; W. Argentina; S. and C. Bolivia.
COMMENT: Formerly included caprinus , definitus , magister , wolffsohni (see Pearson, 1972, J. Mammal., 53:677-686, Pearson and Patton, 1976, J. Mammal., 57:339, and Pearson and Ralph, 1978, Mem. Mus. Hist. Nat. "Javier Prado," 18:1 -97), and bonaeriensis (see Reig, 1978, Publ. Mus. Munic. Cienc. Nat. Mar del Plata "Lorenzo Scaglia," 2(8):180). Pearson, 1958, Univ. Calif. Publ. Zool., 56(4):415, Hershkovitz, 1962, Fieldiana Zool., 46:304, and Pine et al., 1979, Mammalia, 43:353-354, included osgoodi in darwini ; but also see Spotorno, 1976, An. Mus. Hist. Nat. Valparaiso, 9: 141-161, who considered osgoodi a distinct species.
