TYPE LOCALITY: Argentina, Tierra del Fuego Prov., Hoste Isl., Hardy Peninsula .
DISTRIBUTION: Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (S. Argentina; S. Chile).
COMMENT: This species and longipilis have very similar karyotypes; Bianchi et al., 1971, Evolution, 25:728, considered it probable that it is an Abrothrix ; Gardner and Patton, 1976, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. La. St. Univ., 49:30, placed it in Abrothrix which they considered an oxymycterine genus, following Hershkovitz, 1966, Z. Saugetierk., 31: 127. Reig, 1978, Publ. Mus. Munic. Cienc. Nat. Mar del Plata "Lorenzo Scaglia," 2(8): 173, included Abrothrix in Akodon as a subgenus but did not mention xanthorhinus ; Pine et al., 1978, Mammalia, 42: 106, and Pine et al., 1979, Mammalia, 43:351, listed xanthorhinus as a distinct species of Akodon .
