DISTRIBUTION: S. Peru to Bolivia and Argentina.

COMMENT: Subgenus Chroeomys ; see Cabrera, 1961:458, and Reig, 1978, Publ. Mus. Munic. Cienc. Nat. Mar del Plata "Lorenzo Scaglia," 2(8): 176. Bianchi et al., 1971, Evolution, 25:724-736, considered Chroeotnys a distinct genus. Gardner and Patton, 1976, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. La. St. Univ., 49:30, listed this species in Akodon .
