TYPE LOCALITY: Chile, Coquimbo Prov., Coquimbo .

DISTRIBUTION: Chile; W. and C. Argentina.

COMMENT: Included in subgenus Abrothrix of Akodon by Reig, 1978, Publ. Mus. Munic. Cienc. Nat. Mar del Plata "Lorenzo Scaglia," 2(8): 173, and Pine et al., 1979, Mammalia, 43:349; see comment under genus for alternative treatments of Abrothrix . Corbet and Hill, 1980:151, listed lanosus and sanborni as conspecific with longipilis. Pine et al., 1979, Mammalia, 43:351, and Osgood, 1943, Field Mus. Nat. Hist. Publ. Zool. Ser., 30: 194, presented evidence that longipilis and sanborni may hybridize; Pine et al., 1978, Mammalia, 42:105- 114, considered lanosus a distinct species.
