Stigmella stelviana (Weber, 1938) View in CoL Fig. 14–15.
F: Stigmella stelviana ; Klimesch 1981: 122 —‘Western alps from France'; Johansson & Nielsen 1990: 215—‘Western alps from France'
Material. 05: 1♂ pupa, Puy Vacher [La Grave], 1.ix.1899, Potentilla , gen. EvN 3508, Chrétien ( MNHN); 73: 17 TM (rearing failed), larvae on slide, PralognanlaVanoise, Mt Bochor, 2050 m, 21.viii.1979, Potentilla grandiflora , EvN.
Remarks. First detailed records. Stigmella stelviana previously was reported on the basis of the tenanted mines (rearing of which failed) found by EvN in Pralognan (communicated in litt. to Klimesch), but the record remained uncertain because S. tormentillella also can be found on this host. The Chrétien collection contains two pupae reared from Potentilla sp. from Puy Vacher. Dissection of one of these showed the characteristic male genitalia ( Fig. 14–15), thus confirming its occurrence in France. Otherwise, it is known only from high altitude localities in the Italian, Swiss, and Tiroler (Austrian) alps.
