Type material. We do not know the whereabouts of the type specimen(s).

Studied material. 3 spec. NHMW 9836, Catalonia ( Spain) ; 8 spec. NHMW 1869/0036/0008, 5 spec. NHMW 1869/0037/0009, Bassano ( Italy) ; 3 spec. NHMW 1840/0005/0370, 5 spec. NHMW 1862/0049/0052, Barcelona ( Spain) .

Discussion. This species was erroneously reported from the early and middle Miocene of the Paratethys by Kókay (1972), Steininger et al. (1973) and Mikuž (2009). It differs from the Paratethyan A. carniolica by its telescoped acute whorl profile and in the sculpture of the early teleoconch whorls (see A. carniolica for discussion).

Distribution. Allmonia rotifera was originally described by Lamarck (1822) from the late Miocene of Montpellier (southern France), from where it was also discussed by Deshayes (1833). The occurrence of this species in the Eocene of Soissons ( France), mentioned by Deshayes (1833), is highly unlikely (see also Cossmann 1888 and Hilber 1893). Additional occurrences were reported from the Tortonian of the Départements Aude and Vaucluse in S. France ( Fischer & Tournouër 1873; Glibert 1962) and the Veneto region in N. Italy ( Manzoni 1869; De Gregorio 1899; Stefanini 1916; Rumi et al. 1973; Bernasconi & Robba 1993). Along the Portuguese Atlantic coast, the species was recorded also from the Burdigalian (e.g. Palen ҫa), Serravallian (e.g. Xabregas) and Tortonian (e.g. Bra ҫo de Prata) of the Lisbon region ( Zbyszewski 1957; Glibert 1962; Fonseca 1977; see Pais 2004 for stratigraphy). At least parts of these, however, seem to represent Allmonia carniolica . In addition, it was described from the late Neogene of Algeria by Brives (1897). A middle Miocene occurrence was reported by Batllori & Moreno (2003) from the Barcelona region ( Spain). The poor preservation of the illustrated specimen, however, does not allow a clear identification.
