Turritella circumcisa Bałuk, 2006

Turritella View in CoL sp. — Bałuk, 1975: 114, pl. 12, fig. 11.

* Turritella (Peyrotia) circumcisa sp. nov. — Bałuk, 2006: 191, pl. 6, figs 3–4.

Discussion. Based on two spire fragments with imbricate profile and flat sided whorls. Specimens of widespread species with imbricate profile are frequent in the NHMW collections. Especially Ptychidia turris and P. vindobonensis tend to form such extreme morphs. Similarly, the specimen illustrated by Stein et al. (2016: 31, pl. 15, figs 3a–3b) from the Hemmoorian of the North Sea Basin as Turritella cf. aquitanica Tournouër, 1874 [non Zaria aquitanica ( Tournouër, 1874) ] represents such an aberrant specimen. Another example for such growth is the Pliocene Turritella replicata (Linné, 1758) in Chirli (2006: 102 , pl. 40, figs 1–2). Hence, we doubt that T. circumcisa is a distinct biological species.

Distribution. Badenian, Middle Miocene: Carpathian Foreland Basin: Korytnica ( Poland) ( Bałuk 1975).
