Discussion. This taxon was originally described by Sacco (1895) based on shells from the Pliocene of the Po Basin (e.g. Astigiana, Piacentino, Zinola, Albenga; Italy). Schaffer (1912) used the name for poorly preserved specimens from the Eggenburgian (early Miocene) of Austria. A revision of these specimens (KM Inv. no. F/1154, 1155, 1156) revealed that the specimen illustrated by Schaffer (1912, pl. 53, fig. 1) is a fragment of Turritella inaequicingulata Hölzl, 1958 (identical sculpture and wide lateral sinus). The other three specimens are plaster casts and might also represent reworked Turritella inaequicingulata . The identity of specimens from the Sakaraulian (early Miocene) of Georgia, listed as T. vermicularis lineolatocincta by Gamkrelidze et al. (1964) is unclear.
