Type material. The holotype described by Handmann (1882) is lost. Therefore, we designate specimen NHMW 1963/0547/0000 from the Badenian of Steinebrunn ( Austria) as neotype. This specimen was also illustrated by Sieber (1960, pl. 2, fig. 13) and Schultz (1998, pl. 21, fig. 11).

Studied and illustrated material. Figs 19M 1 –M 2 : NHMW 1963/0547/0000, SL: 48.3 mm, MD: 13.3 mm, Steinebrunn ( Austria), Figs 19N : NHMW 2018/0194/0005, SL: 42.9 mm, MD: 13.7 mm, Steinebrunn ( Austria).

Revised description. Shell medium-sized, moderately slender. Protoconch and early teleoconch unknown. Earliest preserved neanic whorls tricostate with sharp, very prominent A, B and C spiral cords of subequal strength. A spiral cord initially distinctly above mid-whorl, accompanied by low-angled, concave sutural ramp, moving slightly in abapical direction during growth resulting in steeper and higher sutural ramp. Primary spiral cords of equal strength on later whorls, forming cylindrical profile of lower half of whorl. Delicate secondary spiral cords covering sutural ramp and primaries; t spiral cord may appear on sutural ramp. C spiral cord abapically separated from suture by narrow constriction. Suture narrow, weakly incised. Last whorl(s) and aperture unknown. Lateral sinus angle moderately steep; lateral sinus of last preserved teleoconch whorl moderately deep, vertex coinciding with position of A and B primaries; weak adapical inflection point and faint abapical inflection point. About eight palatal lirae present.

Shell measurements and ratios. Two incomplete specimens: SL: 48.3/ 42.9 mm, MD: 13.3 mm, suggesting a maximum SL of ~ 56 mm and MD of ~ 15 mm, AA: 21°, PA: 15/14°. Lateral sinus (n = 5): LS angle = 16.1° (σ = 2.6°), LS p = 0.94 (σ = 0.1), LS d = 5.1 (σ = 0.5).

Discussion. This is a very uncommon species, known so far only from few localities in the Vienna Basin. Most occurrences listed by Sieber (1960), however, represent specimens of Archimediella abundans ( Handmann, 1882) with very prominent t spiral cord. These morphotypes of Archimediella abundans can be separated from P. ernesti by their typical sculpture of two sharp B and C spiral keels on neanic whorls. The fragmentary preservation does not allow to define the order of appearance of the primaries. The tricostate status, however, excludes a placement in Archimediella and suggests rather a relation with Ptychidia , Haustator or Helminthia . The simple lateral sinus is closer to Ptychidia . The inner lirae agree also with those observed in other Ptychidia species, whereas the prominent basal lira of Archimediella is missing.

Distribution. Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Gainfarn, Steinebrunn ( Austria) ( Sieber 1960); Borský Mikuláš ( Slovakia) ( Švagrovský 1982).
