Hyogonia brasiliana View in CoL sp. nov.

(figure 1)

Length. Holotype male, 11.6 mm.

Description. Crown (figure 1A) strongly produced; surface smooth, glabrous; median length approximately 0.6 times interocular width and 0.4 times transocular width. Frons inflated; median area longitudinally striated. Epistomal suture incomplete along short median distance. Pronotum (figure 1A) punctate and rugose on posterior two-thirds, with short pubescence. Fore wings (figure 1B) with few punctures on basal portion. Hind wings extended posteriorly as far as middle of third apical cell of fore wings; vein R incomplete. Hind legs with femoral apex setal

formula 2:0:0 (on right leg, left leg missing on holotype). Other morphological characters of head and thorax as in the generic description (see Young, 1968: 230).

Coloration. Head, prothorax (figure 1A) and legs light yellowish brown. Pronotum (figure 1A) slightly darker on posterior two-thirds. Mesonotum (figure 1A), except pale yellow apical half of region behind transverse sulcus, and mesepisterna maroon. Other thoracic pleurites pale yellow. Fore wings (figure 1B) with coriaceous area cerulean blue, mingled with paler markings; veins on area before claval apex maroon, those on apical area pale yellow. Abdominal tergites maroon with large pale yellow areas laterally.

Male genitalia. Pygofer (figure 1C) in lateral view weakly produced posteriorly; posterior margin with slight dorsoapical concavity; disc with numerous dispersed microsetae; ventral margins with spiniform process not attaining apex of pygofer; apex of process blunt. Valve (figure 1D) linear, transverse; much wider than long; anterior margin slightly concave; posterior margin slightly convex. Subgenital plates (figure 1D) triangular; fused basally along membranous area; apex round; not extending posteriorly as far as pygofer apex; with few dispersed setae, more numerous along outer margins; basal setae longer and those on posterior two-thirds shorter and darker, setae on median area more closely spaced. Connective (figure 1E) Y-shaped; with arms widely divergent, each much longer than stem; with dorsal median keel. Styles (figure 1E) short and robust; preapical area without very distinct lobe, with few setae; extending as far posteriorly as apex of connective; apex truncate. Aedeagus (figure 1F,G) symmetrical; preatrium elongate, articulated with connective; pair of lateral atrial processes elongate, spiniform, directed dorsally, parallel to shaft, almost the same length as the latter; pair of caudal atrial processes short, spiniform, with bases very close to each other, perpendicular to shaft. Paraphyses absent.

Female unknown.

Taxonomic notes. Hyogonia brasiliana sp. nov. is externally very similar to H. reticulata (Melichar) and H. youngi Emmrich and Lauterer. The male genitalia of the new species are similar to those of H. reticulata in the short pygofer processes (figure 1C), which do not attain the pygofer apex, and in the caudal atrial processes directed outwards (figure 1G), although in the new species the latter are much shorter. On the other hand, H. brasiliana sp. nov. is similar to H. youngi in the short atrial processes (figure 1F,G), although in the new species the caudal pair (figure 1G) are not directed inwards as in the latter. Hyogonia brasiliana sp. nov. can be distinguished from all known Hyogonia species by the combination of the following features: (1) colour of pronotum (figure 1A) homogeneous, without distinct transverse band of contrasting colour; (2) pygofer with short processes (figure 1C) that do not attain its apex; (3) both pairs of aedeagal atrial processes (figure 1G) divergent and short, never longer than aedeagal shaft; and (4) aedeagal caudal pair of atrial processes (figures 1F, G) with bases close to each other, appearing as a single bifurcated robust process.
