Type Locality: Peru, vicinity of Lima.

Vernacular Names: Short-tailed Chinchilla.

Subspecies: :

Subspecies Chinchilla chinchilla subsp. chinchilla Lichtenstein 1829

Subspecies Chinchilla chinchilla subsp. boliviana Brass 1911

Distribution: Andes of S Bolivia, S Peru, NW Argentina, and Chile.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I (non-domesticated forms only); U.S. ESA – Endangered as C. brevicauda boliviana ; IUCN – Critically Endangered as C. brevicauda .

Discussion: Recognized as brevicauda by Cabrera (1961) and Woods (1993) but see Osgood (1943) and Anderson (1997). Pine et al. (1979) included brevicaudata in lanigera without comment.
