Description. Male ( Figs. 27–30, 31 View FIGURES 27–31. 27–30 c–f). Head dark reddish brown, darker on area between eye lobes. Mandibles reddish brown on basal 2/3, black on distal third. Scape orange; pedicel brownish on about basal half, orange on remaining surface; antennomeres III–V reddish brown; antennomeres VI–VII reddish brown basally, gradually darker toward apex, apex dark brown; antennomeres VIII–X dark brown; antennomere XI dark brown except reddish-brown apex. Prothorax mostly dark reddish brown, almost brown, except dark brown anterior and posterior margins of pronotum, and blackish anterior and posterior areas of prosternum, irregularly interspersed with dark reddish-brown areas; margins of prosternal process black and central area dark reddish brown. Ventral surface of meso- and metathorax mostly dark reddish brown with blackish margins. Elytra brown on anterior third, brown on posterior third with wide triangular projection toward middle along suture, black on central area except narrow almost transverse ivory band before middle, slightly tumid (less tumid dorsally), from near epipleural margin to slightly after middle of dorsal surface. Coxae and trochanters orangish brown; profemora black except reddishbrown apex; almost entire surface of peduncle of meso- and metafemora reddish brown, and remaining surface of femora black, except reddish-brown apex. Tibiae dark brown with irregular reddish-brown areas. Pro- and mesotarsi dark reddish brown on tarsomeres I–II, reddish brown on remaining segments; metatarsi reddish-brown, slightly lighter toward apex of tarsomere V. Abdomen black.

Head. Frons finely reticulate-punctate; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity), with a few long, erect setae of same color close to eyes. Vertex with sculpturing as on frons between antennal tubercles, gradually more rugose-punctate toward prothorax; pubescence as on frons, with a few long, erect setae of same color interspersed. Area between eye lobes nearly smooth. Area behind upper eye lobes finely, abundantly punctate; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity). Area behind lower eye lobes finely, densely punctate close to eye, striate-punctate on remaining surface; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity) close to eye, nearly glabrous on area close to prothorax; with a few long, erect yellowish-white setae on pubescent area. Genae slightly longer than lower eye lobe; finely, abundantly punctate except smooth apex; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity), with a few long, erect setae of same color interspersed. Postclypeus finely punctate on wide central area, smooth laterally; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity) on wide central area (pubescence sparser on sides of this area), glabrous laterally; with a few long, erect yellowish setae on wide central area. Labrum with long, erect, moderately abundant golden setae, and fringe of short golden setae on anterior margin. Gulamentum smooth, glabrous on posterior half, striate-punctate, with sparse, both short and long white setae on anterior half. Upper and lower eye lobes not connected by carina; distance between upper eye lobes 0.84 times length of scape (0.46 times distance between outer margins of eyes); in frontal view, distance between lower eye lobes 1.12 times length of scape (0.61 times distance between outer margins of eyes). Antennae 1.4 times elytral length, reaching posterior fifth of elytra; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument (whiter depending on light intensity), distinctly sparser ventrally on scape, pedicel and antennomere III; scape and pedicel with long, erect, sparse yellowish-white setae; antennomeres III–VII with long, erect yellowish-white setae ventrally, sparser toward VII; antennomere III with distinct spine at inner apex, slightly shorter than 1/3 of length of antennomere IV; antennomere IV with short, distinct spine at inner apex, with about 1/5 of length of antennomere. Antennal formula (ratio) based on length of antennomere III (excluding spine of antennomeres III and IV): scape = 0.55; pedicel = 0.22; IV = 0.47; V = 0.58; VI = 0.55; VII = 0.49; VIII = 0.40; IX = 0.33; X = 0.32; XI = 0.42.

Thorax. Prothorax distinctly longer than wide; sides gradually widened from anterolateral angles to slightly after middle, then distinctly rounded narrowed toward posterior fifth; posterior fifth parallel-sided; anterior margin with fringe of yellowish-brown setae. Pronotum coarsely reticulate-punctate on wide central area (punctures elongated), finely, densely, somewhat rugose punctate on anterior sixth, finely punctate on posterior seventh; with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument, distinctly sparser on reticulate-punctate area; with long, erect, sparse yellowish-white setae. Sides of prothorax with sculpturing and pubescence as on pronotum on wide central area, finely punctate, with distinctly sparse pubescence anteriorly and posteriorly (anterior area gradually widened toward prosternum). Prosternum coarsely, sparsely punctate on posterior 2/3, finely rugose on anterior third; with sparse whitish pubescence on punctate area, slightly denser centrally, forming a band between posterior 2/3 and anterior third, with a few short whitish setae on anterior third. Narrowest area of prosternal process about 0.25 times procoxal width. Mesoventrite nearly glabrous except dense white pubescent band close to mesocoxal cavities, which continues laterally along mesoventral process. Mesanepisternum smooth close to mesoventrite, coarsely, shallowly, sparsely punctate toward elytron; glabrous close to mesoventrite, with long, erect, sparse whitish setae on anterocentral area, with dense white pubescence on remaining surface. Mesepimeron with dense white pubescence. Metanepisternum with sparse yellowish pubescence on anterior half, moderately dense, bristly yellowish pubescence on posterior half, except dense white pubescent band close to metaventrite, which does not reach apex. Metaventrite finely, sparsely punctate; with both, short and long, sparse white setae, except dense, large white pubescent macula close to metacoxae (narrowed, sparser centrally). Scutellum with yellowish-white pubescence partially obscuring integument. Elytra. Slightly, gradually narrowed from humerus to about middle, slightly widened from this point to about posterior fifth, then gradually, distinctly narrowed toward apex; apex nearly truncate, with distinct triangular projection at outer angle, nearly rounded at sutural angle; with distinctly elevated, elongate gibbosity on anterodorsal quarter, slightly closer to the suture than to the lateral sloping area, densely asperate-punctate dorsally; anterior 2/3 coarsely, densely rugose-punctate except smooth ivory band (central area cribrate-punctate), finely, densely punctate on posterior third; anterior third with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument, distinctly sparser on gibbosity, except nearly glabrous sloped area; central area nearly glabrous, except whitish pubescence close to suture, gradually denser, wider toward posterior third; beginning of posterior third with wide yellowish-wide pubescent band, nearly transverse dorsally, distinctly oblique on sloped area; remaining surface of posterior third with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument, distinctly denser than on anterior third; with long, erect, sparse yellowish-brown setae. Legs. Femora with yellowish-white pubescence not obscuring integument, distinctly sparser ventrally and on meso- and metafemoral peduncles; with long, erect setae of same color interspersed. Protibiae with yellowish-white pubescence, gradually denser toward apex, distinctly denser ventrally; with long, erect, sparse yellowish-white setae interspersed. Meso- and metatibiae with sparse white pubescence, somewhat denser toward apex, with long, erect, moderately abundant setae of same color interspersed. Tarsomeres I–II with sparse yellowish-white pubescence dorsally, slightly yellower dorsally on III–V.

Abdomen. Ventrite I with dense white pubescence band on sides of central area, gradually narrowed toward central area; remaining surface with short, sparse white setae, distinctly sparser on anterocentral area, with long, erect setae of same color interspersed. Ventrites II–V with white pubescence not obscuring integument, sparser centrally on II–III, with long, erect setae of same color interspersed.

Female ( Figs. 31 View FIGURES 27–31. 27–30 a–b). Antennae shorter, reaching posterior third of elytra, distal antennal segments stouter.

Dimensions in mm (holotype male / paratypes). Total length, 6.25/5.50–6.25; prothoracic length, 1.70/1.50– 1.70; anterior prothoracic width, 1.10/1.00–1.10; posterior prothoracic width, 1.10/0.90–1.10; widest prothoracic width, 1.45/1.30–1.50; humeral width, 1.60/1.40–1.60; elytral length, 3.90/3.50–4.00.

Type material. Holotype male from HONDURAS, Francisco Morazán: Masicarán cantera, 1-10.VI.2018 (reared, emerged September 2018), J. Vlasak col. ( MZSP) . Paratypes (4 males and 2 females, JVCO; 1 female, DHCO) – same label .

Etymology. We are pleased to name this species in honor of our colleague and friend Dan Heffern in recognition of his contribution to the study of Cerambycidae .

Remarks. Euderces hefferni sp. nov. may be partially included in the alternative of couplet “33” from Giesbert & Chemsak (1997) (modified):

– Cribrate punctate area of elytra wide, placed on central region; ivory transverse macula not tumid dorsally; prothorax proportionally shorter and wider; sides of prothorax moderately abruptly narrowed distinctly before posterolateral angles; abdominal ventrite I with dense white pubescent macula on each side. In the original description, Chemsak (1969) reported on the elytra of E. nelsoni : “apices rounded to shallowly emarginate.” However, it also reported: “The spined apices of the elytra, single pair of eburneous fasciae, and dull reddish color readily separate this species.” This suggests that the outer elytral angle may be somewhat similar to that in E. hefferni sp. nov.

As we believe that the integument color may be variable, E. hefferni may also be included in the alternative couplet “37” from Giesbert & Chemsak (1997):
