Diagnosis
Grey flies of small or medium size (body length 3.5–10.0). Frons in profile more or less angular; parafacial plates with hair-like setae, sometimes almost bare; orb 1 + 0–6; eyes bare; vi strong and elongate. Claws of both sexes elongate, almost straight (in males 1.0–1.2×, in females 0.7–0.8× as long as 5 th tarsomere) ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 (d)). Cell r 4+5 usually open (Figures 6 (f,k); 8 (f,n)), sometimes closed or petiolate (Figure 2 (i)). Abdomen with more or less developed dark spots and bands in hind parts of tergites (Figures 2 (d), 3(d), 4(f), 8(g)); abdominal pattern sometimes frequently reduced, especially in females ( Figures 1 View Figure 1 (e), 2 (k), 5 (f), 8 (o)).
