Type Locality: "Cochin-China" (Indochina).
Vernacular Names: Stump-tailed Macaque.
Synonyms: Macaca brunneus (Anderson 1871) ; Macaca harmandi ( Trouessart 1897) ; Macaca melanotus (Ogilby 1839) ; Macaca melli ( Matschie 1912) ; Macaca rufescens (Anderson 1872) ; Macaca speciosus (Murie 1875) ; Macaca ursinus (Gervais 1854) .
Distribution: Assam ( India) to S China and N Malay Peninsula.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; U.S. ESA – Threatened; IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: M. fascicularis species group according to Groves (2001 c), but probably derived from an early Pleistocene hybridization between M. fascicularis , which it resembles in its mtDNA, and M. assamensis / thibetana , which it resembles in its Y chromosome. Reviewed by Fooden et al. (1985).
