Type Locality: México, Oaxaca, below Pluma Hidalgo, 3000 ft (914 m).
Vernacular Names: Black-tailed Deermouse.
Distribution: Pacific slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur of Oaxaca, México.
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: P. megalops species group. Although named as a subspecies of P. megalops, Huckaby (1980) substantiated the specific status and range of melanurus . Banded karyotype described by Smith et al. (1986).
