"Habitat in Virginia aquosis." RCN: 2293.
Lectotype (Lowden in Rhodora 75: 452. 1973): Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 407.4 ( LINN) .
Generitype of Pontederia Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 144. 1929).
Current name: Pontederia cordata L. ( Pontederiaceae ).
Note: Fernald (in Rhodora 27: 76. 1927) discussed the generic typification at length.
Lowden (in Rhodora 75: 452. 1973), believing the type (from Gronovius) to be missing, designated Kalm’s collection (407.4 LINN) as a neotype. As this material was original material for the name, and hence eligible as a lectotype, Lowden is accepted as having typified the name (in accordance with Art. 9.8). Obermeyer (in Leistner, Fl. Southern Afr. 4(2): 66. 1985) and Reveal (in Huntia 7: 231. 1987) independently opted for the same choice of type.
