Note: It seems clear that this name was created through a typographical error in the thesis, Flora Monspeliensis. In the column containing generic names, Carduus was wrongly placed one line too low, resulting in C. lanceolatus L. (1753) appearing as " Serratula lanceolatus ". The latter name does not appear in later treatments by Linnaeus and is to be treated as an error, as noted by Stearn (in Geck & Pressler, Festschr. Claus Nissen: 631. 1974).
