Genus Coccus Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL

Type species: Coccus hesperidum Linnaeus, 1758 , designated by Opinion 1303 (1985). Diagnosis. Dorsal setae spinose, pointed, blunt or cylindrical ( Figs 17C View FIGURE 17 , 19B View FIGURE 19 , 23D View FIGURE 23 , 25E View FIGURE 25 , 27D View FIGURE 27 , 29A View FIGURE 29 ) (except in C. formicarii , in which they are setose, Fig. 21C View FIGURE 21 ). Marginal setae with pointed or fimbriate apices ( Figs 17J View FIGURE 17 , 19J View FIGURE 19 , 20C View FIGURE 20 , 21B View FIGURE 21 , 23M View FIGURE 23 , 25A View FIGURE 25 , 26C View FIGURE 26 , 27B View FIGURE 27 , 28C View FIGURE 28 , 29I View FIGURE 29 ). Venter with tubular ducts usually present on medial area of thorax or distributed in submarginal area ( Figs 17G View FIGURE 17 , 19F View FIGURE 19 , 21I View FIGURE 21 , 23L View FIGURE 23 , 25M View FIGURE 25 , 27K View FIGURE 27 , 29L View FIGURE 29 ); and legs each with a tibio-tarsal articulatory sclerosis ( Figs 22E View FIGURE 22 , 23I View FIGURE 23 , 24E View FIGURE 24 , 25L View FIGURE 25 , 26E View FIGURE 26 , 27H View FIGURE 27 , 28F View FIGURE 28 , 29M View FIGURE 29 ) (except in C. capparidis and C. formicarii , Figs 17H View FIGURE 17 , 20E View FIGURE 20 , 21H View FIGURE 21 ) ( Hodgson 1994; Wang & Feng 2012a).

Remarks. Coccus is a large genus, comprising about 111 described species from all zoogeographical regions ( García Morales et al. 2016). Adult females of the genus are easily recognized by the presence of ventral tubular ducts mainly in the medial area of the thorax and legs each with a tibio-tarsal articulatory sclerosis ( Hodgson 1994).
