(®gures 10±14) Empis (Coptophlebia) chrysocera Collin, 1930: 110 .

Lectotype designation

According to the original description ( Collin, 1930) and Pont (1995), one pair of co-types has been presented to the NHM, and the remaining syntypes (eight males and seven females) in UMO. Unfortunately the co-types from NHM have

not been found ( Pont, 1995; Chainey, personal communication). Eight males and six females syntypes from UMO have been studied. One male is designated lectotype .

Type material

LECTOTYPE:, Tanzania, Morogoro, 27 April 1927, B. B. Osmaston ; PARALECTOTYPES: 7, 6 m, same data ( UMO) .

Description

Male: length of wing 4.2 mm.

Head with occiput black. Ocellar triangle prominent with pair of short bristles. Face black, not shining. Scape blackish, pedicel brownish, ®rst ¯agellomere yellow, second and third ¯agellomeres yellowish. Proboscis long (twice the head height), labrum brownish, labium black, strongly sclerotized, with distinct annulations, labella slender, bare. Eyes holoptic, upper ommatidia enlarged.

Thorax blackish to dusted greyish, especially in prescutellar depression. Antepronotum with only inconspicuous lateral bristles. Postpronotal lobes dark brown with one distinct, ®ne basal bristle. Proepisternum bare. Acrostichals uniserial, ®ne, very short. Dorsocentrals uniserial, very ®ne, short, with one strong, long prescutellar bristle. Two supraalars, respectively pre- and postsutural, the ®rst one, rather short, ®ne, the second one, stronger, longer. One strong, long notopleural. Scutellum with one pair of strong, long apical bristles. Laterotergite with fan of strong, long black bristles. Anterior and posterior spiracles black.

Legs brownish. Fore femur with only a few distinct ®ne basoventral bristles. Fore tibia with distinct short dorsals at apical tip. Mid femur with one row of rather ®ne, long posteroventrals. Mid tibia with rather strong, short dorsals and ventrals at apical tip. Hind femur with one row of distinct ®ne antero- and posteroventrals. Hind tibia with one row of distinct antero- and posteroventrals. All tarsi with short bristles, more distinct at apical tip of each tarsomere.

Wing clear to feebly brown. Veins brownish. Sc abbreviated. R41 5 branched at right-angle. Discal cell strongly truncate. M1, M2 abbreviated. A1 complete. Anal lobe well developed. Halter with yellowish base and stem, black knob.

Abdomen (®gures 10, 11) with ®rst three segments yellowish, otherwise brownish. Sternite 6 voluminous with two posteroventral processes on each side (®gures 10, 11). Sternite 7 reduced, membranous (®gures 10, 11). Sternite 8 with dorso- and ventroanterior processes on each side (®gure 10). Width of tergite 8 reduced laterally (®gure 10).

Hypopygium (®gure 12) with cercus with V-shaped dorsal margin, several distinct dorsal bristles especially at posterior tip. Epandrial lamellae connected anteriorly, with more or less rectangular shape, distinct posterior bristles at tip. Hypandrium well developed with characteristic shape at tip. Phallus rather short, pointed at tip.

Female similar to male except for the following characters: eyes dichoptic, lower ommatidia a little enlarged. Frons broad, subshining. Face shining in lower part. Wing brown. Fore femur pennate anteroventrally, and anterodorsally except at apical tip. Fore tibia with a few short ventral pennate bristles at apical tip, pennate dorsally, especially on apical half. First tarsomere of fore tarsus pennate dorsally, very short pennate ventrally, second tarsomere with a few dorsal pennate bristles. Mid femur short pennate anterodorsally on apical half except at tip, short pennate posterodorsall y in the middle, long pennate posteroventrall y except at basal tip. Mid tibia more or less long pennate dorsally, distinctly pennate ventrally on basal half. Hind femur very short pennate posterodorsally on apical half, with longer anterodorsal pennate bristles on apical half except at tip, very long pennate anteroventrals except at basal tip, a few short pennate posteroventrals in the middle. Hind tibia long pennate ventrally except at apical tip, long pennate dorsally. Second tarsomere of fore tarsus with one or two pennate dorsal bristles. First tarsomere of hind tarsus with distinct ®ne dorsal pennate bristles. Tergite 7 somewhat desclerotized in the middle, with more or less circular-shaped anterior margin (®gure 13). Cercus longer than broad with short bristly hairs.

Discussion

E. chrysocera belongs to the E. (C.) chrysocera -complex. The characteristic V-shaped dorsal margin of male cerci, the shape of female tergite 7 and the ornamentation of the female legs distinguishes this species from all other species of the E. (C.) chrysocera -group.
