Begonia hirsuta View in CoL herb. Ruiz ex Klotzsch nom. rej.
Ber. Berkanntm. Verh. Konigl. Presuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin 1854: 127 (1854). = Pilderia hirsuta Klotzsch nom. nud., Ber. Berkanntm. Verh. Konigl. Presuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin 1854: 127 (1854). = Begonia pavoniana A.DC., Ann. Sci. Nat., Bot. 4, 11: 142 (1859). Type: PERÚ. 1778, Ruiz & Pavón s.n. (lectotype (here designated) B, photo F [F0BN020808]).
Klotzsch’s original description of the genus Pilderia included P. hirsuta Klotzsch nom. nud. as a constituent taxon including the rejected name Begonia hirsuta herb. Ruiz ex Klotzsch. Specimens annotated by Ruiz as “ B. hirsuta del Perú ” were later treated by A.L.L.P. de Candolle as the type of B. pavoniana A.DC. , which has since been shown to be synonymous with B. humilis Dryand and in B. sect. Doratometra ( Schulz 1911) . This species and section are distantly related to B. sect. Pilderia (see Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).
