Coniceromyia ciliatipes Borgmeier View in CoL
( Figs. 55–58 View FIGURES 55 – 58 , 156 View FIGURES 139 – 157 , 208 View FIGURES 203 – 214 , 270 View FIGURES 269 – 272 , 322 View FIGURES 318 – 324 )
Coniceromyia ciliatipes Borgmeier, 1969a: 4 View in CoL , figs. 8–10.
Diagnosis (male). Foretrochanter with ventral group of strong setae; ventral margin of the left epandrial process with a rounded ventral expansion.
Material examined. Holotype ♂, DOMINICA, W. I., S. Chiltern Est., 20.ii.1965, W.W. Wirth col. ( USNM) . Additional material: DOMINICA, W. I.: 1♂, Freshwater Lake , 21.i.1965, W.W. Wirth col ( MZSP) .
Redescription. Male. Body length, 1.8 mm. Head. Frons brown, sparsely setulose, with weak median furrow. Flagellomere 1 brown, pubescent, elongate-conical. Arista apical, pubescent, about 0.25 times flagellomere 1 length. Palpus white; one genal setae. Thorax. Scutum, scutellum and pleural regions brown, anepisternum bare. Legs yellowish-brown, hind femur with apical darkening. Foretrochanter with ventral group of strong curved setae ( Fig. 322 View FIGURES 318 – 324 ). Forefemur with ventral row of thin long setae. Foretibia with two dorsal setae and anterodorsal row of strong setulae ( Fig. 156 View FIGURES 139 – 157 ). Foremetatarsus with anteroapical setulose process, anterior excavation and seta on the base of the anteroapical process. Hind femur swollen (height/length ratio, 0.4), with posteroventral group of tiny blunt setulae with semicircular distribution, tapering toward ventral margin ( Figs. 270 View FIGURES 269 – 272 ). Hind tibia with one dorsal seta. Wing ( Fig. 208 View FIGURES 203 – 214 ). Costa not swollen, 0.43 of the wing length; M1 concave, curved posteriorly on its apex; M2 slightly concave; antero-posterior distance between M2 and CuA1 at CuA1 apex about 1.4 distance between M1 and M2 at the same level; CuA1 sinuous. Halter white. Abdomen. Tergites dark brown, with lighter posterior band. Hypopygium light brown ( Figs. 55–58 View FIGURES 55 – 58 ). Epandrium covered with microtrichia mostly dorsally, proximal lateral areas bare; epandrium dorsal suture absent; left suture present. Left epandrial process dorsally setose, with ventral rounded expansion, setulose medially directed lobe near apex and subepandrial transversal elevation connected to a projection with five teeth. Right epandrial projection with subepandrial group of setulae. Hypoproct with two setae. Hypandrium without lateral projections.
Geographical distribution. Dominica, West Indies.
Comments. This redescription complements the original description of Coniceromyia ciliatipes ( Borgmeier, 1969a) mostly by the recognition for this species of the foretibia anterodorsal row of strong setulae and foremetatarsus seta on the base of the anteroapical process. C. ciliatipes is probably closely related to C. latimana and C. pilicoxa , sharing with them the distinct setose process on the foretrochanter venter ( Figs. 322–324 View FIGURES 318 – 324 ).
