1a. Saddles and subsaddles rectangular with anterior and posterior median projections; saddles and spots faded, poorly defined in relation to background color; dark spots small, spiracle-sized, concentrated within saddles and not randomly scattered on back; light spots larger or equal to spiracles and scattered randomly on back; mouth width around 10% TL; head wide and depressed at gill-slits; interdorsal space 2.1–2.5 times dorsal-caudal space; adult males at 445 mm TL and adult female at 500 mm TL......................................................................................... Scyliorhinus ugoi View in CoL

1b. Saddles and subsaddles not rectangular and without anterior and posterior median projections; saddles and spots clearly defined in relation to background color; spots varying in size, concentrated within saddles or randomly scattered on back; light spots, when present, smaller than spiracles and concentrated within saddles; mouth width around 8% TL; head slender, not depressed at gill-slits; interdorsal space 2 times or less dorsal-caudal space; adult males smaller than 400 mm TL and adult females about 420 mm TL.............................................................................. 2

2a. Black spots bilaterally symmetrical, restricted to saddles and subsaddles; spots, when present between saddles, larger than spiracles, forming a single row; sickle-shaped, lunate, and double spots present; white spots, when present, occur from the pectoral saddle in males and from the first dorsal fin saddle in females; most spots larger than spiracles; envelope well-defined and exorhipidion well-developed in claspers; first dorsal fin square-tipped or triangular; head length 17.5–19.2% TL............................................................................................. 2b. Black spots randomly scattered on back, without bilateral symmetry and not restricted to saddles and subsaddles; spots between saddles smaller or equal to spiracles, not forming a single row; sickle-shaped, lunate and double spots absent; white spots present, situated before the first dorsal fin saddle in males and females; most spots smaller than spiracles; envelope absent and exorhipidion poorly developed in claspers; first dorsal fin triangular, never square-tipped; head length 19.7–20.8% TL......................................................................
