Diagnosis. Helicopsyche guariru n. sp. is unique in having the inferior appendage elongate, tapering to a pointed apex, with its basomesal lobe reduced to a small process bearing one or two short spine-like setae apically. The new species is similar to Helicopsyche vergelana Ross 1956 ; however, it can be easily differentiated from this species by the tapered apex and very reduced basomesal lobe of the inferior appendage of the new species.

Description. Adult male. Head with cephalic warts oval and flat. Postantennal setal warts bean shaped, almost as wide as scape. Antennal scape about as long as eye diameter. Forewing brownish, 3.7 mm long (holotype). Hind wing 2.9 mm long (holotype), with 20 hamuli on basal half of Costa (Venation as in Figure 4 View FIGURE 4 A). Abdominal sternum VI process about half as long as its segment, straight in lateral view, tubular, oriented posteroventrad, and apically obliquely truncate ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 G). Male genitalia. Segment IX, in lateral view, with anterior margin produced in rounded lobe; anteroventral margin shallowly concave; dorsal margin nearly straight, anterodorsally slightly produced ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C); in dorsal view deltoid, anterior margin deeply concave ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B); in ventral view rectangular, anterior margin recessed, straight, without posterior process; lateral apodeme developed as longitudinal line; tergal transverse apodeme apparently absent ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B); sternal transverse apodeme absent ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D). Segment X, in lateral view, oriented posterad, nearly straight, tapering to narrowly rounded apex ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C); in dorsal view, slightly narrowing apically, apex distinctly and shallowly notched, with about 17 pairs of subequally long setae ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B). Superior appendage club-shaped, oriented lateroposterad ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 B, 4C). Inferior appendage, in lateral view, with proximal half about equally broad, strongly widening at distal half; distal half deltoid with undulate margins, apex acute ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C); in dorsal view elongate and tapering, interior margin with two subapical setal processes and another such process about midlength, exterior margin entire; basomesal lobe very small ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B); in ventral view, with 2 short spine-like apical setae (in holotype), with concave posterior portion of phallus lying between lobes of paired appendages ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D); basal plate, in lateral view, nearly straight, narrow anteriorly ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C); in ventral view, triangular, with apex narrowly rounded ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D). Phallus, in lateral view, with anterior half nearly straight, smoothly bent ventrad at midlength, dorsal margin posteriorly undulated, ventral margin slightly undulated ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 F); in ventral view, basal part nearly 2x thicker than narrowest central region ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 E); phallotheca posteriorly concave and very enlarged; phallobase present as narrow lobe; endotheca produced; phallotremal sclerite conspicuous, bean-shaped ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 E).

Etymology. Guariru, used as a noun in apposition, is a name for “water deposit” in Tupi-Guarani, the language of the Cariris and Sapujás Indians who inhabited the region of the Serra da Jibóia mountains.
