Type species. Panamapisa guaymii View in CoL sp. nov., monotypy.
Included species. Panamapisa guaymii View in CoL sp. nov..
Diagnostic description. Body subcylindrical. Head eyes absent; anteroventral margin excavate. Antenna 1 longer than antenna 2; accessory flagellum absent. Antenna 2 peduncular article 1 bulbous. Maxilla 1 inner plate with 4 apical plumose setae; palp well-developed, 2-articulate. Maxilla 2 inner plate with oblique setal row. Mandible palp well-developed, 3-articles, palp article 3 shorter than article 2, palp tapering distally. Labium inner plates well-developed. Maxilliped palp article 2 extending well beyond outer plate; outer plate large, rounded apically with large robust setae.
Gnathopod 1 coxa not anteroventrally produced; merus greatly enlarged with setae posteriorly. Gnathopod 2 propodus longer than broad, palm with sinus, palm without large marginal robust setae. Pereonites without stalked gills; without sternal gills. Pereopod 4 coxa without a posteroventral lobe. Pereopod 5 short, reaching into merus of pereopod 6. Pereopods 5–7 dactyli with fringing setae. Pereopod 6 simple, not prehensile; basis posteroventral corner forms a narrow triangle. Pereopod 7 basis posteroventral corner forms a narrow triangle.
Pleopod 3 not sexually dimorphic. Urosomite 2 without small robust setae dorsally. Uropod 1 with basofacial seta. Uropod 2 exopod shorter than endopod. Uropod 3 not sexually dimorphic; rami narrow; endopod small; exopod about 0.7 × length of body, length 14. 5 × breadth, without many robust setae; with 2 articles, article 2 very long. Telson slightly cleft, as long as broad with two distolateral robust setae.
Remarks. Panamapisa is a distinctive interstitial marine genus with a subcylindrical body. It has several characters states not shared with other eriopisids: the largest gnathopod 1 merus among the Eriopisidae , by far the longest third uropods, 70% of the body length and a slightly cleft telson. The nearest comparison for known eriopisids is one-third to one-quarter of the body length. Of those species only Eriopisa Stebbing, 1890 and Victoriopisa Karaman & Barnard, 1979 have inner lobes on the labium. Neither Eriopisa nor Panamapisa have a basofacial robust seta on the peduncle of uropod 1.
Panamapisa is similar to Eriopisa in having maxilla 1 inner plate with setae along the medial margin, gnathopod 1 palm with a large sinus and uropod 1 peduncle without a basofacial robust seta. They differ most significantly in the antenna 1 accessory flagellum (present in Eriopisa and absent in Panamapisa ), maxilla 2 inner plate with an oblique setal row (absent in Panamapisa ), gnathopod 1 coxa anteroventrally produced (not produced in Panamapisa ), gnathopod 2 palm robust setae (present in Eriopisa , without robust setae in Panamapisa ), the dactyli of pereopods 5–7 (marginal setae absent in Eriopisa , with marginal setae in Panamapisa ) and the length of uropod 3 (about 30% in Eriopisa , nearly 75% of the body length in Panamapisa ).
