Subgeneric Name. The name Phymatinus View in CoL probably comes from the Greek word “ phyma”, or “phymatos”, meaning tumor, or swelling, and the Latin suffix “- inus” meaning likeness, or belonging to. This is probably in reference to the shiny, round tubercles on the dorsum of adult specimens of P. gemmatus , the type species of Phymatinus View in CoL .
Diagnosis. Adults of this subgenus are distinguished by the following combination of characters: scape long, extending to or beyond middle of eye, beyond posterior margin of eye in most species; females with four ventrites, or if five present ( P. gemmatus ) then elytra and pronotum exhibit large, round, shiny black tubercles. Males of all species in this subgenus have the apex of the aedeagus extended into a broad, dorso-ventrally flattened projection.
Included Species. Panscopus gemmatus , P. spantoni , P. squamosus , and P. michelbacheri .
