Genus Ectopioglossa Perkins, 1912 View in CoL View at ENA

Ectopioglossa Perkins 1912: 118 View in CoL , genus. Type species: Ectopioglossa australensis Perkins, 1912 View in CoL [= Eumenes australensis Meade-Waldo, 1910 = Ectopioglossa polita australensis (Meade-Waldo) View in CoL ], by monotypy.

Diagnosis. Belonging to the group of Eumeninae “Odynerini” with petiolate metasoma, distinguished by the following combination of characters: epicnemial carina present, axillary fossa oval but longer than wide, propodeum dorsally with elongate fovea from which a carina runs to orifice, propodeal valvula short and fused to submarginal carina, T1 with lamellar transverse carina basally, S1 usually reduced to posterior triangular sclerite (normally developed in some African species), second submarginal cell acute basally, female with cephalic foveae.

[characters of E. africana , E. borsatoi and E. nigerrima extracted from literature]

1. Extensively marked with yellow and/or red................................................................ 2

- Entirely black with reduced pale yellow markings........................................................... 3

2. Clypeus strongly convex, narrowly truncated at apex. Sparse large punctures on pronotum. Apical part of T1 with convex sides in dorsal view. Metasoma almost completely impunctate, except fine punctures on T3 and S3 and following segments. Red markings on apical third of T1 only; yellow markings extensive on mesosoma............... E. borsatoi Giordani Soika View in CoL

- Clypeus weakly convex, widely and deeply emarginate at apex. Moderately dense fine punctures on pronotum. Apical part of T1 with straight sides in dorsal view. Metasoma with some punctures on side of T2 and on following segments. Red markings extensive on whole body; yellow markings on mesosoma restricted to apex of propodeum.... E. advocata (Giordani Soika) View in CoL

3. Dorsal face of pronotum smoothly passing into lateral faces, lacking oblique humeral carina; punctures on dorsal face of pronotum variable in density and size, interspaces with sparse micropunctures. Wings subhyaline, without metallic reflections................................................................................ E. africana Gusenleitner

- Dorsal face of pronotum distinctly separated from lateral faces by an oblique humeral carina; punctures on dorsal face of pronotum regular in density and size. Wings infuscate along costal margin, with weak metallic reflections.............. 4

4. Oblique humeral carina weak and blunt. T1 about 3× as long as apically wide. Narrow basal part of S1 with weak and irregular transverse striae. Pronotum with large and sparse punctures, interspaces shagreened and at least as wide as puncture diameter. Dorsal faces of propodeum with dense microreticulation and subopaque. T2 with deep punctures on sides and on extreme apex, median part impunctate. Head and mesosoma with long and dense silvery setae, metasoma with shorter and denser pubescence......................................................................... E. sudanensis sp. nov.

- Oblique humeral carina strong and sharp. T1 about 2.5× as long as apically wide. Narrow basal part of S1 with strong and dense transverse striae. Pronotum with large and dense punctures, some interspaces being cariniform. Dorsal faces of propodeum shiny. T2 with deep sparse punctures on whole surface. Pilosity short and sparse, fulvous......
