Diagnosis. Abdomen with yellow hairs on tergites 1 and 2 and reddish hairs on the other tergites, wing brown with hyaline apex; resembles S. theotaenia .
Redescription. Female (Station E-52, 21.vii.1952). Head. Frons dark brown, with black hairs and a slight line of silver pollinosity on the margin of the eyes, best seen in dorsal view. Frontal index: 4.85. Divergence index: 1.33. Frontal callus as wide as frons; mid-callus inconspicuous. Subcallus brown, shiny; base of the antenna with yellow pollinosity. Scape and pedicel brown, with black hairs and sparse golden pollinosity. Flagellum brown with dense golden pollinosity. Basal flagellomere with dorsal spine reaching first flagellomere. Face and parafacia brown, with silver pollinosity and dark brown hairs. Postgena brown with dark brown hairs. Palpus brown with black hairs.
Thorax. Scutum brown, with yellowish-gray pollinosity and black hairs. Scutellum lighter than the scutum, with black hairs. Postpronotal lobe light brown, with white hairs proximally and black hairs distally; notopleuron light brown with black hairs; proepisternum brown, with yellowish-gray pollinosity, white hairs proximally and black hairs distally; proepimeron brown with yellowish-gray pollinosity and black hairs; anepisternum and anepimeron brown with dark brown to black hairs; katatergite dark brown with yellowishgray pollinosity and black hairs; katepisternum dark brown with silver pollinosity and dark brown to black hairs; katepimeron dark brown with silver pollinosity; few white hairs on base of wing, beside the basicosta. Coxa brown with yellowish-gray pollinosity and black hairs. Other parts of leg dark brown with black hairs, except for white hairs proximally on anterior and anterodorsal sides of the tibia and for reddish hairs on the ventral side of the tarsus. Wing light brown with hyaline apex; venation brown; pterostigma brown. Halter light brown with yellowish apex.
Abdomen. Tergites 1 and 2 yellow with yellow hairs. The other tergites light brown with reddish hairs. Sternite 1 light brown with black hairs in middle, yellow hairs laterally and reddish hairs on the middle of the distal margin. The other sternites light brown with reddish hairs.
Measurements. (n = 1, Station E-52, 21.vii.1952) Body length: 10.71mm. Wing length: 10.14mm.
Male: unknown.
Type-locality. Panama (Canal Zone: Barro Colorado Island).
Distribution. Honduras to Ecuador; Venezuela.
Examined material. PANAMA. Almirante: female, Bocas del Toro, 8.ix.1952, without collector, ( MPEG); female, Station E-52, 21.vii.1952, without collector, ( MZSP); Darién: female, Mortí Canopy, 27.x.1966, without collector, ( MPEG).
Remark. The holotype Ƥ of S. panamensis is currently deposited at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, U.S.A.
