ETYMOLOGY. — The species is named for the unembellished nature of its morphology.
DISTRIBUTION. — The species is only known from French Guiana.
DIAGNOSIS. — Carineta modesta n. sp. can be differentiated from multiple species of Carineta by the lines of infuscation within the apical cells and lack of mesothoracic markings. The remaining species with striped infuscation and the absence of meothoracic markings are C. cinara , C. cyrili , C. dolosa , C. doxiptera , C.socia , and C. viridicollis . All these species have a body length greater than 22 mm.
DESCRIPTION
Ground color greenish ochraceous with ochraceous abdomen. Some paratypes faded to ochraceous from green with age or chemical exposure when captured in the mercury vapor light trap.
Head slightly narrower than mesonotum without markings, ochraceous centrally, completely ochraceous in some paratypes. Covered with golden pile. Ocelli rosaceus. Eyes golden. Ventral head ground color. Postclypeus centrally sulcate, with eight transverse grooves, golden pile laterally and within transverse grooves. Long golden pile on ventral head and anteclypeus. Rostrum with piceous lateral surfaces near tip reaching to middle trochanters. Scape and pedicel ground color, antennal flagella piceous.
Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotum with fine golden pile on dorsum, longer laterally. Lateral margin of pronotal collar absent. Long golden pile on lateral and posterior mesonotum, between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, in wing groove, and on posterior metanotum. Ventral thoracic segments ground color except tawny trochantin 2, basisternum 2, episternum 3, trochantin 3 and basisternum 3.
Tegmina and wings hyaline. Venation ground color, becoming testaceous distally, except testaceous anal vein 2 + 3. Basal membrane grayish. Paired striated infuscation within apical cells 1-7 continuing onto marginal area. Hind wing venation greenish except testaceous ambient vein. Vanal fold, anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3 gray.
Legs ochraceous, tawny linear marks on lateral fore coxa, tawny spot on hind coxa. Lateral coxae and spots of middle hind coxae variably marked in paratypes. Fore femora with proximal spine oblique, secondary spine upright and tertiary spine angled less than primary spine. Spines testaceous with darker anterior margin and tip, primary spine largest, secondary intermediate in size and tertiary spines smallest. Tibial spurs and comb castaneous. Pretarsal claws with piceous tips.
Male operculum greenish ochraceous with fuscous spot on medial base, sharply rounded posterolateral margin, posterior margin straight, angled posteriorly, to rounded medial margin, apex reaching anterior sternite II margin. Medial margin extending past middle of meracanthus.Meracanthus ground color, robust, with fuscous lateral margin, not reaching to anterior margin of operculum. Female operculum with rounded posterior margin, terminating medially short of meracanthus, not reaching posterior of tympanal cavity. Meracanthus similar to male. Fuscous markings reduced or absent in some paratypes. Opercula covered with long golden pile which also radiates from margin.
Abdomen greenish ochraceous, green or ochraceous in paratypes. Epipleurites green, ochraceous or testaceous in some paratypes, sternites testaceous. Abdomen covered with fine golden pile dorsally, long golden pile ventrally, long and short golden pile on male sternite VIII. Timbal with six long and one short rib.
Male pygofer greenish ochraceous with fuscous dorsal beak and upper pygofer lobe. Anal styles fuscous with silvery pile. Median uncus lobe fuscous, short with rounded terminus. Pygofer upper lobe elongated, bent into right angle. Basal lobe of pygofer small with long, thick radiating pile. Claspers fuscous, flattened, crossing near base, narrowing to point at apex. Aedeagus elongated, fuscous.
Female genitalia ground color except testaceous ventromedial margin of abdominal segment 9, gonapophysis VII, and ovipostior sheath. Sternite VII deeply notched, border of notch extending posteriorly producing a flap, posterolateral margin of sternite parallel to anterior margin. Dorsal beak extending twice the length of anal styles forming a right angle with posterior margin of abdominal segment 9. Long golden pile on abdominal segment 9 and ovipositor sheath. Ovipositor sheath extends beyond dorsal beak.
