Type locality: Straits of Florida, off Dry Tortugas. Illustrations: Anderson & Heemstra, 1980, fig. 2; Anderson & Heemstra, 2012, fig. 23; Ross & Quattrini, 2007, fig. 7 (i).
D: X, 14 or 15 (rarely 15). A: III, 7 or 8 (rarely 8). P: 18 (rarely 16). C: 15 (8+ 7). V: 26 (10 + 16). S: 2. GR: 38 to 40 (11 or 12 + 26 to 29). LL: 42 to 48 (usually 45 or 46). CP: 21 to 24 (usually 22).
Distribution: western Atlantic off the southeastern United States from Cape Lookout, North Carolina, to Dry Tortugas, Florida; also, based on a photograph of a fish caught in Norfolk Canyon, may range as far north as Virginia Beach, Virginia, ( Anderson & Heemstra, 2012: 86).
