In the protologue of Ilex dicarpa, Li (1981) compared her plant with I. intermedia Loesener (1901: 273) , and Chen et al. (2008) placed this species in I. sect. Ilex . However, this plant is actually closely related to I. triflora and I. szechwanensis . The three all have flowers on the current year’s shoots, and their leaves are glandular-punctate on the lower surface, which was overlooked by Li (1981). Therefore, I. dicarpa should be placed in I. sect. Paltoria (Ruiz Lopez & Pavon 1794: 13) Maximowicz (1881: 20), rather than in I. sect. Ilex .
