Ilex dunniana Léveillé (1911: 458) , syn. nov. Type:— CHINA. Kouy-Tchou (Guizhou), Long-ly , May 1908, J. Cavalerie 3000 (holotype: E; isotypes: K).

Ilex dunniana was first described from E Guizhou, not far from the type locality of I. intermedia , W Hubei. The two localities are both outside the Pan-Himalaya, but Chen et al. (2008) have recorded this species in SW Sichuan, within our region. I have critically examined lectotypes (K, W) and syntypes (K) of I. intermedia , and the holotype (E) and isotype (K) of I. dunniana , but I could not find any significant difference between them. Hu (1950: 79) identified both the holotype and the isotype of I. dunniana (E) as I. intermedia var. fangii (Rehd.) S.Y. Hu (1950a) .
