Zett.” in synonymy); Xylota triangularis Zetterstedt, 1838 (in Bezzi & Stein 1907: 127–132).

TYPE SPECIES: Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 , by subsequent designation ( Coquillett 1910a: 621).

CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Zelima Fabricius, 1807 ; junior synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1822 . New Synonymy.

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .

REMARKS: Zelima was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 22) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1903: 58) proposed Zelima in synonymy by treating it as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803 , but did not include any species. Bezzi & Stein (1907: 127) treated Zelima as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803 , and included 25 species (under Xylota ). Hendel (1908: 58) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Zelima as valid, which makes the name available from Hendel (1903). Coquillett (1910a: 621) selected Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 , which is the type species by subsequent designation. Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 is currently treated in Xylota Meigen, 1822 [teste Sabrosky (1999: 325)], which makes Zelima Hendel, 1903 a junior synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1822 , n. syn.
