41. Pelopia

[ Pelopia ] Meigen, 1800: 18.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Tanypus Meigen, 1803 [teste Ashe & Cranston (1990: 117)].

Pelopia Latreille, 1802: 425 .

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Tipula maculata De Geer, 1776 .

TYPE SPECIES: Tipula maculata De Geer, 1776 , by monotypy.

CURRENT STATUS: Senior synonym of Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 . New Synonymy.

FAMILY: CHIRONOMIDAE .

REMARKS: Pelopia was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 18) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Latreille (1802: 425) gave characters to differentiate his proposed group k of Tipula Linnaeus, 1758 sensu lato: “ Ailes en toit, assez grandes. Abdomen court. Antennes de douze articles ou moins, et dont le dernier est plus renflé, ovulair. (Corselet très-voûté.)” and stated “Exemples. Tipula maculata De Géer. — Le genre pelopia de Meigen?” This conditional proposal is allowed under Article 15.1 of the ICZN Code. A few years later, in an Italian translation of this work, Latreille (1820: 360) placed Pelopia in synonymy with Tipula (s. str.) without the question mark. The name Pelopia is thus made available both in Latreille (1802) and Latreille (1820) and both are earlier than Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 , with which it is synonymous due to the only species included in Latreille (1802) and Latreille (1820), Tipula maculata De Geer, 1776 . Hendel (1908: 49) was the first after Latreille (1802) to treat Pelopia as valid, thus making the name available from Latreille (1802). Tipula maculata De Geer, 1776 is currently treated in Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 [teste Ashe & Cranston (1990: 117)], which makes Pelopia Latreille, 1802 a senior synonym of Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 , n. syn. Acceptance of either Pelopia Latreille (1802) or Pelopia Latreille (1820) as senior to Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 may potentially threaten the stability and taxonomy of Ablabesmyia . If it is found to do so, an application to the ICZN Commission is recommended to suppress Pelopia Latreille (1802) and Latreille (1820) in order to conserve the younger Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905 .
