Etymology:— aquatica , referring to the aquatic habitat of the fungus.
Colonies effuse, consisting of conidiophores scattered over the substrate surface, olivaceous brown. Mycelium mostly immersed or superficial, consisting of branched, septate, smooth, thin-walled, pale brown hyphae. Stromata none. Setae and hyphopodia absent. Conidiophores 280–335 × 5–6 μm, macronematous, mononematous, pale brown to brown, paler towards the apex, smooth, thick-walled, multi-septate, unbranched, long cylindrical, slightly flared at the top, slightly flexuous, erect, with percurrent proliferations. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, terminal or intercalary, pale brown to blackish brown, cylindrical, smooth, cicatrized. Conidia 17–20 × 14–18 μm (x = 18.8 × 15.8 μm, n = 30), holoblastic, acropleurogenous, solitary, dry, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal, muriform, with longitudinal, transverse and oblique septa, pale brown to black-brown, evenly pigmented, thick-walled, with a distinctly protuberant basal cell; basal cells 5 μm wide, 2–5 μm long, cylindrical, truncate, subhyaline, pale brown to medium brown. Conidial secession schizolytic.
Specimens examined:— CHINA. Yunnan Province: Mengla , stream in rubber trees field (E101º 37´, N21º 24´, altitude 646 m), on submerged wood, 3 Apr 2016, D.M. Hu ( HFJAU 0700 , holotype) GoogleMaps ; ibid. ( HFJAU 0701 ) GoogleMaps .
Notes:— Junewangia aquatica is characterized by its flared conidiophores with percurrent proliferations, monoblastic, cylindrical conidiogenous cells, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal conidia with transverse and oblique septa, features that fit well with the generic concept of Junewangia ( Baker et al. 2002a) . In the phylogenetic tree ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) inferred from combined SSU-ITS-LSU data, the isolate of Junewangia aquatica nested in the well-supported clade of Junewangia (BPP = 0.97; MLBS = 97 %). Both morphological and molecular data supported that the fungus belongs within the genus Junewangia . J. aquatica is morphologically distinct from the other species in Junewangia by its intercalary conidiogenous cells.
