Pista sombreriana McIntosh, 1885 View in CoL
Pista sombreriana, McIntosh, 1885:451 View in CoL , Pl. XXVIIA, Fig. 27 View FIGURE 27 .
Type material: Type NHM 85.12 .1.344. Not borrowed because it is indeterminable (Salazar-Vallejo, pers. comm.) .
Diagnosis from the original description and illustration: Specimen incomplete, 2mm wide. Tentacles and branchiae absent in the specimen. Chaetae limbate; uncini MF:3–4 according to the text. MF as long as twice the accessory teeth; Sr narrow, with a well developed, acute SrP projected in the same direction of the MF; SrA not showed; LSr concave; AP divided in two rounded lobes, the upper larger than the lower lobe; AF absent; Bs slightly rounded on its lower margin, and thick; small angular protuberance between LOc and PP; a straight UOc; Cp with about 6 rows of teeth, according to figure.
Discussion: Since the original description is vague, material from the type locality need to be located, revised and redescribed to confirm characters and differences of P. sombreriana with other Pista species. However, since the type specimen is in such poor condition (Salazar-Vallejo, pers. comm.), material from the type locality needs to be examined; it may be necessary to designate a neotype or this species may be indeterminable, The plate by McIntosh (1887) has only one figure of an uncinus; neither the chaetae or body features were figured. According to the single figure, it has Cp with about 6 rows of teeth, which is greater than what is stated in the text. The AP is divided into two, and together with the well-developed and thick Bs, seem to be characteristic of this species, but uncommon in the other species from the Grand Caribbean region. Thus, this species could be valid according to the type of uncini, but this needs to be corroborated by the type specimen or material from near the type locality.
Type locality: Off Sombrero and St. Thomas Islands, Antilles. From 702 to 846m.
