Diagnosis: Branchiae absent; eyespots absent; lateral lappets on segment 1 or 1–2; ventral shields from segment 2; nephridial papillae on segments 5–10; 16–23 pairs of notopodia from segment 4, notochaetae distally either dentate or smooth; pairs of neuropodia from segment 6, uncini avicular in single rows in segments 6– 10; in double rows, arranged face to face, until segment 19; thereafter in single rows.
Remarks: According to Holthe (1986b), four species have been described, P. emmi Annenkova, 1937 , from the Tartar Strait, Russian Pacific, at 18–58m; Proclea glabrolimbata Hessle, 1917 , from Graham Land, Antarctica, at 360m; Proclea graffi ( Langerhans, 1884) , from Madeira, in shallow waters; and P. malmgreni ( Ssolowiew, 1899) , from the White Sea, western Russia. No species have been described from America.
