Axonopsella Lundblad, 1930

Lundblad (1930) erected the genus Axonopsella based on a female, not realizing that only males have subgeneric characters. Therefore it is unknown which male belongs to Axonopsella s.str., and thus far the Australasian species of the genus have not been assigned to a subgenus. From Australia 31 species and one subspecies are known (Cook 1986, Smit 1996a), from New Guinea two species from the mainland and one from Waigeo (Smit 1996b, Wiles 1997b). Here one new species is described, and one male is assigned to a species previously known in the female only. As several females are present in my collection which could not be assigned to a known male, the number of species will increase in the future with more research.
