Jouvea View in CoL and subtribe Monanthochloinae

Jouvea View in CoL , along with the subtribes Monanthochloinae , Muhlenbergiinae, Hilariinae, Scleropogoninae, and Boutelouinae, plus the genera Sohnsia View in CoL , Allolepis View in CoL , and Kalinia Bell & Columbus (2012: 91) View in CoL , form a clade of species from the Western Hemisphere, and including a few Asian species of Muhlenbergia ( Peterson et al. 2016) View in CoL . The only other species of Cynodonteae with inflorescences reduced to one spikelet belong to Monanthochloinae ( Distichlis acerosa View in CoL , D. australis View in CoL , and D. littoralis View in CoL ) ( Bell & Columbus 2008).

Subtribe Monanthochloinae , similar to Jouvea View in CoL , includes dioecious species occurring in saline habitats ( Bell et al. 2010, Peterson et al. 2016). In addition to having inflorescences reduced to one spikelet, the subtribe includes species with panicles of spikelets ( Distichlis laxiflora Hackel (1911: 141) View in CoL , D. palmeri Fasset (1924: 984) View in CoL , D. spicata Greene (1887: 415) View in CoL , and some specimens of D. bajaensis Bell (2010: 59)) View in CoL , and racemes of spikelets ( D. bajaensis View in CoL , D. eludens ( Soderstrom & Decker 1964: 335) Bell (2008: 548) View in CoL , D. humilis Philippi (1891: 86) View in CoL and D. scoparia Arechavaleta & Balpardo (1897: 457)) ( Pilatti 2016) View in CoL . Distichlis View in CoL comprises species that are stoloniferous ( D. acerosa View in CoL and D. littoralis View in CoL ) and rhizomatous ( D. australis View in CoL , D. bajaensis View in CoL , D. eludens View in CoL , D. humilis View in CoL , D. laxiflora View in CoL , D. palmeri View in CoL , D. scoparia View in CoL , and D. spicata View in CoL ) ( Pilatti 2016). The trophotagma enrichment axes at the long internode zones may ( D. acerosa View in CoL , D. australis View in CoL , D. bajaensis View in CoL , D. littoralis View in CoL , D. scoparia View in CoL , and some specimens of D. spicata View in CoL ) or may not be present ( D. humilis View in CoL , D. laxiflora View in CoL , D. palmeri View in CoL , and some specimens of D. spicata View in CoL ) depending on the species and individual observed ( Pilatti 2016). When present, these axes are generally unbranched and do not form prophyllar systems ( Pilatti 2016). By contrast, Jouvea species have a constant and permanent presence of these axes, forming complex prophyllar branching systems.
