Coelioxys (Rhinocoelioxys) platygnatha View in CoL n. sp.

( Figs 11 View FIGURE 11 A–F, 12)

Diagnosis. The shape of the mandible is diagnostic for this species, not only within the subgenus C. (Rhinocoelioxys) but also among all species of Coelioxys known to us. The mandible is strongly flattened dorsoventrally and covered with a fringe of pale hairs laterally and a fringe of dark hairs subapically.

Description. Female. (RPSP). “Codajás-AM, Brasil, 09– 11.07.1993, 62º4’W, 3º51’S, 932202”. “Camargo, Pedro, Mazucato, leg.”. “ Rhinocoelioxys ”.

Measurements. Body length: 6.77 mm; forewing length: 4.38 mm; head width: 1.88 mm. Coloration. Black except as follows: Antenna, legs, sterna dark brown; tegula light brown; wings subhyaline; veins brown.

Pubescence. Pale, subappressed on: Paraocular area, supraclypeal area, clypeus, apical margin of clypeus, gena, labrum, complete transverse fascia on anterior margin of mesoscutum, mesosoma, legs, basal fascia of T1, apical fasciae of sterna. Ocular hairs pale, long (about 0.12 mm). Scattered erect, slender, yellowish setae on paraocular area. Scattered, thick, erect, brown setae on supraclypeal area, clypeus, medially on apical margin of clypeus those setae are longer. Apex of clypeus covered with fringe of yellowish hairs which are longer medially. Mandible covered with minute, appressed yellowish hairs dorsally, densely on lateral margins, apex with long, plumose, yellow hairs. Upper paraocular area with long, brown hairs distinct from those of adjacent regions, oriented mesad, apices of some hairs from each side almost meeting medially. Slender, erect, yellow setae on punctures on mesoscutum. Thick, yellow setae on tarsi. T2–T5 apical fasciae composed of appressed, plumose, pale hairs. Lateral margins of S5 with erect, thick, brown setae. Apex of S5 with fringe composed of short, thick, brownish setae. Lateral margins of T6 subapically with sparse, subappressed, brownish setae.

Surface sculpture. Ocellar area coarsely punctate; vertex moderately densely punctate, interspaces among punctures larger than puncture diameter; mesoscutum, mesepisternum sculptured, moderately densely punctate, punctures on disc of mesoscutum larger towards the sides, elliptical; mesoscutellum coarsely punctate, dorsomedian ridge smooth, almost impunctate; axilla coarsely, densely punctate; T1 moderately densely punctate, interspaces among punctures shining, larger than the puncture diameter; pregradular areas of T2–T5 moderately densely punctate, interspaces shining, smooth; postgradular areas of T2–T5 shining, with sparse punctures forming transverse row with additional small punctures medioposteriorly, T6 densely punctate, punctures very small, well separated, more densely punctate apically; S1 punctate; postgradular areas of S2–S4 moderately densely punctate basally, sparsely towards apex, postgradular area of S5 sparsely punctate basally, more densely punctate towards apex.

Structure. Apical margin of clypeus simple, nearly truncate. Mandibles strongly flattened dorsoventrally, oarshaped. Mesoscutellum with dorso-median ridge medially, subtriangular, posterior margin obtusely angulate. Axilla long, acute. T6 subacute apically, without sulcus laterally. Dorso-median line of T6 obsolescent except forming sharp ridge apically with depressions lateral to the sharp ridge shallow, obsolescent. Apex of S5 rounded. S6 slender, elongate, lateral margins convergent apically, notches obsolete, tip subacute. The sting apparatus of C. platygnatha was not dissected since this species is only represented by the female holotype.

Male. Unknown.

Etymology. From the Ancient Greek words πλατύς (platy-, “flat”) and γνάθος (gnatha, “jaw”) in reference to its strongly flattened mandible.

Floral Records. Unknown.

Host Records. Unknown.

Geographical Distribution. Brazil (Amazonas) ( Fig. 10).

Material examined. Holotype. BRAZIL. Amazonas. 1 female ( RPSP). “Codajás-AM, Brasil, 09- 11.07.1993, 62º4’W, 3º51’S, 932202”. “Camargo, Pedro, Mazucato, leg.”. “ Rhinocoelioxys ”.
