Diagnosis. Wiedemannia (Philolutra) vaillanti differs by the completely dark brown scutum, acrostichals divergent around prescutellar depression, 5 pairs of dorsocentrals without interspersed shorter setae, fore femur apically without strong anterior setae; clasping cercus with anterior lobe prolonged, digitiform and slender, without cluster of apical setae; dorsal process anvil-shaped, inner margin without dense setae.
Distribution. PALAEARCTIC: Caucasus: Russia (Krasnodarsky Territory, Karachay-Cherkess Republic), Georgia, Abkhazia; Asia: Turkey (Bolu: Yedigöller National Park).
Remarks. This species was described by Joost (1981) from Tscheget, Terskol and Dombai ( Russia: Kabardino-Balkaria Republic and Karachay-Cherkessia Republic), but Chvála & Wagner (1989) in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera mistakenly indicated the species from the Georgian territory. Therefore W. vaillanti is noted from the territories of Georgia and Abkhazia for the first time. This common species is known from mountain rivers of the Caucasus from elevations between 780–2100 m a.s.l. and is active from April to July.
