• Medium-sized, robust rodents, with 3-4 dorsal lines of white spots, four digits and a rudimentary thumb on forefeet, and five digits and reduced first and fifth toes on hindfeet.

• Lowland and highland forests, and tropical alpine tundra habitats, generally near water.
• 1 genus, 2 species, 6 taxa.
• No species threatened; none Extinct since 1600.
