Dichopetala andeana Hebard 1924
This species was for a long time apparently only known from the original type series of eight males and females from southern Ecuador, collected in the environs of Loja at 2200 m. Only a few years ago the Italian colleagues discovered on their expeditions an abundant population near Catamayo, air-line distance about 20 km west of Loja (around 35 km road distance), at 1500 m. There the katydids live in the dense shrub-like vegetation covering the hillsides, and can also be found in grassy vegetation along the road to Loja ( Buzzetti et al. 2010) View in CoL . Very recently the new and so far monospecific genus Cohnia Buzzetti, Fontana & Carotti 2010 was created, to separate this species from Dichopetala , a mostly Mexican genus, whose species typically do not occur further south. The separation is based on morphology of the pronotum, male cerci, titillators, and female subgenital plate. The pronotum disk is not restricted in the middle in contrast to the two previous genera, and the lateral lobes are perpendicular. Tegmina are of roughly the same length as the pronotum.
