TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.S. R., Kazakh S.S. R., Vostochno-Kazakhstansk. Obi., Altai Mtns., Bukhtarma; alternatively, Ust-Kamenogorsk .
DISTRIBUTION: Turkestan to Mongolia; south to Afghanistan, N. India; Ladak; Nepal; Sikkim; W. and N. China.
COMMENT: Corbet, 1978:218, and Haltenorth, 1963:121, included orientalis (= aries ), musimon , and vignei ; but see also review by Nadler et al., 1973, Z. Saugetierk., 38: 109- 125; Corbet and Hill, 1980:127.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as O. ammon .
CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as O. a. hodgsoni subspecies only.
