( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1–9 , 24–27 View FIGURES 24–27 , 42 View FIGURE 42 )

Neochauliodes sinensis occidentalis Weele, 1909 View in CoL . Notes Leyden Mus. 30: 260. Type locality: Sichuan (Omeishan). Neochauliodes occidentalis Weele, 1909 View in CoL : Banks (1940).

Diagnosis. Head yellowish brown, ocellar triangle reddish brown; wing hyaline with distinct dark brown median transverse band; male tenth sternum in lateral view narrow, slightly wider at middle, with tip blunt.

Male. Body length about 27 mm; forewing length about 38 mm, hindwing length about 34 mm.

Head yellowish brown, but reddish brown around ocellar triangle. Compound eyes brown, ocelli pale yellow with black inner margin. Antenna blackish brown. Mouthparts pale brown.

Prothorax yellowish brown, dorsally with pair of brownish vittae on lateral margins; meso– and metathorax blackish brown. Wings ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–9 ) hyaline with brown marks; pterostigma long, pale yellow. Forewing with one brown stripe proximal to and one or two small spots distal to pterostigma, one brown mark on proximal costal area; proximal marks usually connected with each other, forming a V–shaped mark; median transverse band distinct, dark brown, extending from C to Cu; distal marks rather paler, with scattered dots. Hindwing similarly marked, but with proximal half hyaline. Veins pale brown except for costal crossveins blackish brown. Rs four–branched, R 2 distally three or four–branched, three crossveins between R 1 and Rs; M two–branched; 1A two–branched.

Abdomen blackish brown. Tenth tergum ( Figs. 24, 26 View FIGURES 24–27 ) in lateral view subquadrate with rounded distal margin; in dorsal view slightly inflated distally. Tenth sternum ( Figs. 24–25 View FIGURES 24–27 ) strongly sclerotized; in ventral view slender triangular, with proximal margin arcuately incised, and with tip slightly incised; in lateral view slender, slightly curved dorsad, with median portion slightly wider, and with tip blunt.

Female. Body length 36–38 mm; forewing length 45–48 mm, hindwing length 39–43 mm.

Eighth sternum subtrapezoidal in lateral view, with distal margin strongly produced posteriorly. Tenth tergum ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 24–27 ) short and thick with dorsodistal corner produced posteriorly. Gonocoxite ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 24–27 ) membranous, much smaller than tenth tergum, foliate with pointed tip, obliquely directed dorsad.

Type material. Lectotype ♂, CHINA: Omei Shan ( NHM).

Distribution. China (Gansu, Sichuan).

Remarks. This species was first described as a subspecies of N. sinensis . However, based on the illustrations of Kimmins (1954), this species possesses distinct genitalic differences from N. sinensis . Banks (1940) has treated it as an independent species from N. sinensis . We examined the habitus image of the lectotype and series of specimens of N. occidentalis in our collections, all of which were collected from southwestern China. So, the distributions of this species from Laos and Vietnam recorded by Lestage (1927) are somewhat doubtful and need further investigation.
