Neochauliodes amamioshimanus View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1–9 , 10–13 View FIGURES 10–13 , 45 View FIGURE 45 )

Diagnosis. Forewing with many dispersed small spots; male tenth sternum in lateral view with apex strongly inflated, in ventral view with proximal margin arcuately incised.

Male. Body length 16–22 mm; forewing length 29–32 mm, hindwing length 27–28 mm.

Head entirely pale brown. Compound eyes brown, ocelli yellow with black inner margin. Antenna blackish brown. Mouthparts dark brown; mandible with distal half reddish brown.

Thorax dark brown except prothorax yellow. Legs brown with short, dense, brown setae; tarsal claws reddish brown. Wings hyaline with many scattered brown marks ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–9 ); pterostigma short, pale yellow. Forewing proximally with one small brownish spots on costal area, and respectively with a stripe proximal and distal to pterostigma, proximal stripe much longer; two hyaline areas without marks located on proximal 1/3 and distal 1/3. Hindwing similarly marked, with proximal half entirely hyaline; median transverse band narrow, extending to Cu. Veins pale yellow except costal crossveins dark brown. Rs four–branched, R 2 distally three– branched, R 3 and R 4 distally curved posteriorly; three crossveins between R 1 and Rs; M two–branched; 1A two–branched.

Abdomen dark brown. Tenth tergum ( Figs. 10, 12 View FIGURES 10–13 ) in lateral view subquadrate with round distal margin; in dorsal view apex slightly inflated ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10–13 ). Tenth sternum ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10–13 ) strongly sclerotized, in ventral view subtrapezoidal, proximal margin arcuately incised, distal margin slightly incised ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10–13 ); in lateral view its apex strongly inflated, with subdistal ventral margin angled ventrad and tip angled dorsad ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10–13 ).

Female. Body length 22–30 mm; forewing length 33–36 mm, hindwing length 30–34 mm.

Eighth sternum subtrapezoidal in lateral view, with distal margin strongly produced posteriorly ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10–13 ). Tenth tergum short claviform with dorsodistal corner slightly produced. Gonocoxite ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10–13 ) membranous, subquadrate, obliquely directed dorsad.

Type materials. Holotype ♂, JAPAN: Amami –oshima Island, Fukuomoto, 25.VI.1995, Y. Kaneko ( CAU) . Paratypes: JAPAN: ♂ 2 ♀, Amami –oshima Island, Uken, 22/ 23. VI .1987, K. Uesugi (HC); ♀, Amami – oshima Island, Sumiyou, 21. VI .1987, K. Uesugi (HC); ♂ 2 ♀, Amami –oshima Island, Asato River, reared from larvae, F. Hayashi (♂ ♀ in HC, ♀ in CAU) .

Etymology. The specific epithet ‘ amamioshimanus ’ refers to the type locality of the new species.

Distribution. Japan (Amami–oshima Island).

Remarks. The new species was first recorded by Shirozu (1964) as N. sinensis , and this was followed by Hayashi (1990). However, it distinctly differs from N. sinensis by its wings having scattered small marks and by the male tenth sternum with the subdistal portion strongly inflated and dorsally directed in lateral view. It is endemic to Amami–oshima Island in Japan. It appears to be closely related to N. punctatolosus Liu & Yang in having the scattered small marks on the wings. However, males of N. punctatolosus have the tenth sternum acutely incised, and V–shaped on the basal margin in ventral view, and its distal tip rounded in lateral view.
